From the Latin word for hostage, applied to Christ as the victim for our sins. This usage appears in the prayers of the Mass. But then it was applied to the Eucharist and in particular to the consecrated bread. It is sometimes improperly used to refer to the bread used for the Eucharist even before the consecration.
